Court measurement in badminton
For the badminton, the court dimensions are almost universal and applicable to all levels – profession, collegiate, and high school.
The court dimension rules and regulations are usually mandated by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), which is the governing body for the sport of badminton recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the world governing body for the sport of badminton.
A badminton court is of a rectangle shape and it is divided into two sides for two-player
First, let's look at the outer line measurement
The length of a badminton court is 44 feet(13.41 m) and the breath of the court is 20 feet (6.1 m)
These are the outer most line of a badminton court, from this we can also know how much area will a badminton court take
Area of a badminton court is 81.801 sq.m but some space should also be left along with the court so that players racket will not hit anything outside the court
Over 1 m should be left from both sides (vertical line) whereas 1.5 m should be left from both bottom side (horizontal line)
Second phase (badminton court size)
After the outer line lets look at the measurement of sidelines, 1.5 feet (46 cm ) should be space between the outer and inner line as shown in the picture
These sidelines are drawn for singles play, any shuttle landing outside these line in singles is not valid, one more thing in doubles these lines (vertical to 44 feet line ) are considered as IN both during service and rally.
Whereas the lines which are drawn horizontal to net in both side of the court is service line and any shuttle in both singles and doubles if land before this line is considered as OUT
Third phase (badminton court size)
After the sideline now let's draw the back service line for doubles and space between both lines is 2.5 feet (76 cm) as shown in the picture
These horizontal lines to the 20 feet lines is drawn for doubles service meaning that any shuttle which lands outside this line is OUT in doubles during service
Fourth phase
After the back service line for doubles now let's look at the measurement of front service line the distance between net and front service line is 6.5 feet (1.98 m) as shown in the picture
Fifth phase
You can see in the picture that both side of court is divided further in two half and the distance between them is 8.5 feet (2.59 m) excluding the sidelines
Whereas the total distance of both halves combined is 17 feet
Both courtside is divided in two half because in badminton service is done diagonally
Sixth phase
In the previous phase, we discussed the breath of those two halves now the length of the half-court is 13 feet (3.96m). look at the picture for more clarification
This is the final phase of court measurement in badminton
Net and pole height in badminton
The net is 5 ft 1 inch high at the edges and 5 ft high in the center.
The net posts are placed over the doubles sidelines, even when singles are played.
Badminton nets in badminton are made of various materials such as nylon, polyethylene, and vinyl.
When you are selecting a net go for a dark color because it will provide better visibility during gameplay
The nets are lined with white tape on the upper side, that has a cord or cable within it so that the net can be stretched over each of the net posts on either side of the badminton court.
Height of ceiling
The BWF's Laws of Badminton and Regulations Handbook states that the ceiling height for major tournaments must be 39 feet above the floor of the court. The same height requirement is prescribed for international badminton tournaments, as well.
But for a domestic court 30ft is also sufficient
The main purpose of a high ceiling is that the shuttle should not hit the ceiling when a player plays aggressive lob or clear.
