"Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon?
Or ask the grinning bobcat why he grins?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?"
- "Colors of the Wind," Disney's Pocahontas
The bobcat, also called the wildcat or bay lynx, is a North American mammal. Bobcats are slightly larger than the average housecat, weighing 15 to 33 pounds (7 to 15 kilograms). Bobcats can live almost anywhere - deserts, forests, and even cities.
The bobcat gets its name from its short tail, which appears to be "bobbed" or cut off. Small bobcats may easily be mistaken for domestic cats.

The bobcat has long been an element of popular culture. They featured in Native American folklore. For example, in one myth of the Shawnee tribe, a rabbit tricked the bobcat into building a fire. The embers singed its fur, giving it its spots. Today, bobcats serve as the mascot for many sports teams.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Bobcat
1. Outline the bobcat's bean-shaped body. Use two curved lines, and note that they do not connect at the neck or hip.
2. Draw the bobcat's legs, erasing as necessary. Outline the legs using pairs of curved lines. Enclose the paws using short, overlapping curved lines to form the toes.
3. Draw the remaining legs. Outline the front of each leg using a long curved line, and use short curved lines to form the toes.
4. Outline the bobcat's furry head and neck. Use overlapping "U" shaped lines to create the furry tufts at the animal's cheeks. Use curved lines to connect these to the body and neck. Draw a horizontal curved line to form the top of the head.
5. Draw the bobcat's pointed ears. Use curved lines to enclose the triangular shape. Then, draw another curved line along the side of each ear, giving the ears a three-dimensional appearance.
6. Draw short curved lines at the tips of the ears, forming this species' characteristic ear tufts.
7. Draw the short tail using overlapping curved lines. Draw narrow, overlapping "U" shaped lines along the chest to give it a furry appearance.
8. Detail the bobcat's face. Pattern the forehead with wavy lines. Enclose the curved shapes of the eyes, using a pair of curved lines for each. Draw another curved line across each eye to form the eyelid. Beneath it, draw a circle within a circle, and shade between them. Draw the mushroom-shaped nose using three "U" shaped lines. Then, draw a curved "W" shape beneath it to indicate the mouth. Define the chin with a short curved line.
9. Draw a curved line across the bobcat's tail, and wavy lines across its face. Pattern the beast's fur with shaded dots and splotches.
Color your cartoon bobcat. Bobcats typically have cream, tan, brown, or reddish fur with dark spots. Their cousin the lynx is grey and cream in color with black spots.
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? Try your hand with more animals of the North American wilderness, including bears, elk, coyote, wolves, moose, deer, otters, raccoons, rabbits, and more.
